THE VISION THING

I see the dead bodies heaped up
like so many aluminum cans
along the highway --- Iraqis,
Ecuadorans, Palestinians,
Chinese students, street kids,
parents murdering their children,
governments torturing their citizens,
retirement funds squandered
by rogue corporate executives,
3 out of 5 with cancer, soup kitchens
unable to keep up with the flow,
heroin available anywhere you
happen to be in America.

Nor are we to speak about abortion
or the unwanted born who have nothing
and will have nothing except a dirty needle
or junk food and medication to keep you sedated.

I see the bodies heaped up, and I wonder
who else sees them, or cares, or knows what to do
that we might resurrect our human dignity,
undo the horror of war, reveal the injustice
of poverty or expose the lies
that take us to death?
