From Uri Avnery

Under the Black Flag
By URI AVNERY

A Spanish judge has instituted a judicial inquiry against seven Israeli political and military personalities on suspicion of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The case: the 2002 dropping of a one ton bomb on the home of Hamas leader Salah Shehade. Apart from the intended victim, 14 people, most of them children, were killed.

For those who have forgotten: the then commander of the Israeli Air Force, Dan Halutz, was asked at the time what he feels when he… Continue

How You Can Help Relieve the Suffering in Gaza

Dear Friends,

Responding to reports from Kathy Kelly and Audrey Stewart (who have now returned to the U.S. from Gaza), many of you asked the question: "What is to be done?" and, especially, "How might I contribute funds to assist with humanitarian relief efforts in Gaza?"

We at Voices would like to suggest that you consider making a contribution to one of the following organizations. Each is an organization with which Voices has worked--either collectively as an organization or as individuals.… Continue

Lorca's Body to be Exhumed

Spain braced for opening of civil war's mass graves digging into the brutal repression unleashed by General Francisco Franco will this week complete a list of 130,000 names of those killed during and after Spain's civil war as the country prepares to face the full horror of what has often been treated as a shameful national secret.

The list will be handed over to the controversial magistrate, Baltasar Garzón, whose preliminary investigations have already provoked a fierce row over whether a mas… Continue

Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bombings

Masako’s Story

The cenotaph for the Hiroshima A-bomb victims reads, "Let all the souls here rest in peace, for we shall not repeat the evil." Still, war goes on incessantly in what promises to be a bloody first decade of the 21st century, and the evil here referenced, the atomic bomb, is commonly flaunted as a threat by various participants. How then can the souls of the Hiroshima dead rest in peace?

One way is to keep them always in mind and never to forget what happened on Aug. 6, 1945. But… Continue

It matters not -- do not have one now... Besides my art and poetry are on the mystical end (not your style or flavour). But thanks for the mention. Ciao - AT

HI - Changing beliefs takes time - changing thought patterns takes time. Just because marches did not stop the war (they were not in charge of it - but their message did get out) does not mean we have to accept the status quo and not envision and not hope -- After all, would we stop writing poetry if one poem failed? - Thank you.

Thanks for your posts. I'm stretched between different sites so I don't get here as often as I'd like. I'm preparing for the upcoming Passover season. How'er things over at Beyond Baroque? I hope everyone was energized by the lease renewal. Something about where I've been:

Email Message Sent on High

Fires licked the bottom of my chair
in front of the computer screen where I sat
for most of the day except
when I hurried with my Oakland A's gym bag
and disappeared to that same place
hanging out in a steam room
after lifting it's enough already free weight,
back to my office, floor beams falling around
from applications not being processed,
updates that should've been made yesterday,
forms that had to go live for a hearing,

it feels like everything is a such a royal mess,
which is not meant as a criticism,
so please don't take this personally,
it's just every day I keep hearing about
more people dying in the cradle,
guns going off in funeral parlors,
I'm watching sheets of ice
fall to pieces on the evening news,
so maybe, you think, I should encrypt myself,
but today on the pavement in front of where I work,
someone spray-painted the 10 Commandments,

which I took as a sign
leading me behind my condo complex
at the edge of the city far from the nearest shopping mall
to a canyon preserve where dogs run wild without leashes
and ferns unfold their fronds.
I see poison oak flash red glittering leaves,
cattails teach scripture wearing seeded beards,
and golden poppies slope down the hill
in brilliant orange
blazing a path to the bottom.

You are so very welcome, but it's just my responsability as a fellow human being living on earth to spread the word to anybody awake enough to listen. Hopefully people like you and I can save a few lives from it before they corrupt last beautiful minds.

How's the nonfiction entries coming along for Nov. 3? I have a number of interesting submissions that I'm looking at. Here's how my "Chekhov List" is coming along:

Chekhov List

On the drive back from LA
we pass through almond trees dusted with white blossoms,
from mountains, rolling hills, farmland, to a web of powerlines,

half-way houses of gas stations and their convenenience stores
with heavy duty oil booster and engine oil treatment,
thirsty tune-ups in a 32-ounce glass,

relics of Chevron gas trucks from different years
mounted above the cashier where there's phone
and gas plastic, but no mail-in redemption cards,

flag decals, flaming eagles, skulls grinning inside
glowing crosses, girls in stiletto heels wrapped in the American
flag, a dust brush, a life lite, a flashlight and a CD organizer for the car.

We settle on a jumbo pack of corn chips
sealed with its own container of salsa, pull-off top.
I have itchy fingers and so want to get it

the way I wanted you all weekend
on a solid block of plastic resin
carved with a spray of roses.
