Hello, Megan! I wish that it didn't ring so true for so many women in the world - It would be a much nicer place to live in if it didn't! When I first wrote this poem and the rest that comprise my first book, "Poison Pearls", I was concerned tha...

You are right. I absolutely enjoyed that. And I am sorry to hear of your wife. And to breast cancer. My mother is going on 27 years this summer as a breast cancer survivor. I have survived on her strength, and I believe God is keeping her here because he knows I need her.

I want to say that poetry to you is what life's experiences has brought you -- I hope I made sense in that statement. I know no other way to put it. from what you said that lady said, it's like you can read poetry without conviction and feel every word, letting it come to life.

Poetry readings are my outlets and I don't do enough of them. Da'Poetry Lounge is a great venue to get going, but I need to be in an element where I can feel that I really belong.

I sometimes escape in my poetry. Where I put aside my anger and my fears, where I express those things that hold me sound and stable. But you, I have never come across a talent such as yours.

Hi, Rene!

I'd like that, too!

They say that recitation is a lost art, but there are still some of us that can turn a phrase without turning it into a song and dance.
A couple of years ago I was in the Dead Poets' Book Store in Las Vegas, prospecting for some lost treasures for my trove - I found one, too - a first edition copy of Edna St. Vincent Millay's "Fatal Interview."
While I was there I also found a book of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's sonnets back in the corner and without really thinking about it, I was reading aloud as I came out of the corner:

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints,—I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life!—and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death."

What I did not know was that while I had been rummaging around in the corner, the owner of the book store had come in - an older lady who has heard a LOT of poetry read in her life - and she turned around to me, looked me in the eye and said, "THAT was THE BEST reading that I have EVER heard!"

After that we introduced ourselves, but I will always treasure that moment.
Everything about it was so genuine and spontaneous that it means more to me than even a good review in the NY Times or a staged interview with Oprah for her book club ever could.

I'll tell you something else - When I was reading it, in my mind I was reading it to Peggy, my much loved wife of seventeen years who I had lost to breast cancer in 1997 - All the passion, pain and love that I had felt for her was in that reading!

Hi Again!

Ten more days in the hospital and two weeks confined to the house except for doctor's appointments - Bummer!
The good news is that I'm feeling pretty good and it might not be too much longer before the doc says that I can go Postal again! (My Day Job! Every poet needs one!)
Fortunately this is one that comes with pretty good health insurance - after 15 days in the hospital and all my other expenses, though, my share might still come to five figures - that's a pretty pricey vacation and not much fun!

Hi, Megan!

Thank you for asking, but right now the news is not the best.
I've been home since Tuesday after a five day stay in the hospital with a severe leg infection. It's a nasty bug and even Intravenous antibiotics have had limited effect. I've been home with a combination of two different oral antibiotics since then, but I think that it has gotten worse since then. I should be seeing a doctor tomorrow and I expect that he'll be making a change in my medication. If you don't hear from me, then I'm probably back in the hospital!

"The First Time" -- Yes, it does hit awfully close to home, and in some cases it is frighteningly a true story, or that some can relate in some way. I wouldn't change one word or the tone about that poem. It is a message within itself. Where can your books be purchased?

The Sculpture that you see

Is "Quadriga II" by Vlad Ivanov, a very talented Ukrainian sculptor and a good friend of mine.

His chosen medium is steel and he uses different grades and types to achieve dark and light effects within his sculptures, first working out his designs at the drafting table. His subject matter is generally ancient Greek mythology and he loves to do his modern interpretations of time honored tales of ancient gods and heroes.

He also loves horses and dragons - two of his dragons grace the gates of Dr… Continue

Hospitalized!

Sorry, guys & gals!

As I write this, I'm looking at some of the things I've prepared to go into the hospital - including some writing materials!

I've been fighting a bad infection for a month now and it's taken everything that we've thrown at it and come back for more. My doctors have given up on trying to treat it as an ordinary infection and we are resorting to extraordinary measures!

It's serious enough that their actions are justified, but I don't feel that it's l
