I walk the rainbow streets,
heritage finding its purpose,
reminded of the sacrifice
necessary to build a free nation.
looking past my origin,
it feels right to be part of the
whole, past the crippling rhetoric,
you are me as I am you.
I remember Dad, spouting his idioms,
as though it were yesterday, my favorite,
“there is a penalty for every success”
no truer words need be spoken.
on the shores of Ellis Island,
footprints paint the path to freedom,
greeted collectively with open arms,
scorned…
