I got email this morning from Cindy Childress, and thought you'd like to hear her news:
"I am going to defend my dissertation tomorrow, so most likely by 5:30 your time, I will be Dr. Childress. Amazing, huh? I spent April 1-10 in the hospital with multiple blood clots in both lungs, which really hurt, and I'll be on blood thinner for the next 6 months at least.
The problem arose from a mixture of heredity (I have an aunt on my Dad's side who got clots beginning at age 26), birth control pills (I'd just been switched to one with a higher level of estrogen), and being off
my feet with a sprained ankle in Feb. Fortunately I was on health insurance--because I eloped in January with Jack Charles, whom I met in Lafayette. He's a petroleum engineer with Baker Oil Tools, and he's
currently based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; I will join him soon sometime in June, and his contract is for up to three years. I plan to write and try to get a teaching gig, but I haven't been able to worry about that
with all the health stuff anf dissertation stuff going on."
I will urge her to create a Poets For Human Rights activity after she settles in Malaysia.
