Poets for Human Rights

Words of Freedom

AAFIA SIDDIQUI (A Disappeared Person)

Among the disappeared,

thousands who want

justice or at least

sense and meaning

that our lives

have not been wasted.

For five years, Aafia Siddiqui

was missing, in Pakistan,

while her captors lied

and claimed

they knew nothing.

Due process is no longer relevant.

The truth is no longer necessary.

The dust has covered us,

we have forgotten, we are forgotten,

we have lost our souls.

Aafia Siddiqui, American scientist,

mistreated, tortured, shot,

brutalized and finally,

after five years,

brought home.

How can I look into your eyes?

How can I speak the words?

Who will believe me?

May I please use this poem in Human Rights and Culture? The Asian Human Rights Commission has written several statements about Dr, Aafia; they may be found at: http://www.ahrchk.net/statements/mainfile.php/2008statements/1690/
